There is no gay gene!

Blockbuster speech on “The Gay Gene Hoax” silences pro-gay crowd at Framingham State College.

Very powerful and informative - it blew them away, said one observer.
Framingham, MA - March 31, 2008

Sorba talked for a little over an hour. His speech was mostly taken from several chapters of the current draft of his upcoming book, “The Born Gay Hoax.” click here for draft.

He began with the factual history of the homosexual movement from its beginnings in the 1800s. He showed that until the mid-1900s the concept of “homosexual” did not even exist – that even its practitioners thought of it as aberration of normalcy – and that among men it had nearly always also been associated in some way with pederasty (sex with young boys).

He then described the modern homosexual propaganda movement, which blossomed in the 1980s, and how the “born that way” strategy was a central part of the plan to proselytize America. It was conceived by two Harvard graduates, Marshall Kirk, a researcher in neuropsychiatry, and Hunter Madsen, a PhD in politics and expert on public persuasion tactics, who wrote “After the Ball” and other articles. Interestingly, the “born that way” strategy was largely rejected by the movement when it was first proposed. But it soon caught on and – along with the strategy of demonization of Christian critics – became a centerpiece of the larger campaign which continues in full force to this day. (bold mine).

Sorba also discussed the large amount of evidence against the “gay gene” or “born that way” theory, including writings and observations from prominent homosexual activists. The more overwhelming cause of homosexuality, as he points out, involves severe issues with parents and sexual abuse at a young age. For example, in the famous lesbian couple of Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche, both of them were sexually molested by their fathers (or step-fathers) when they were teenagers.

Ryan Sorba’s book “The Gay Gene Hoax” is expected to be published within 6-9 months.

Your wet noodle crap is no longer welcome here. Try again - your opinion's are welcome when expressed within the context of what is posted.

@ Stacy and Neil - I also hope this book puts the truth front and center - no matter how many militant types it offends.

Hey Mark,
Why is what Ryan Sorba has to say important to you? Really, I would like to know.
Let's just assume it is a choice. Why does that matter to you? You clearly have chosen the religion you follow. It isn't genetic. It is a choice. Does that mean I should be fighting to keep you from being equal in this society? This seems to work both ways. But you don't find me trying to limit the rights that Christians have even though you and the rest of them have chosen to be in that particular religion.

It has been shown that there is a tendency for gay men to have more older biological brothers (as opposed to older step brothers, or sisters) on average than heterosexual men (which means that saying "But I know a guy who has five older brothers and he's as straight as a deck" is irrelevant. I'm talking about recurring tendencies). This is thought to derive from some maternal reaction in the womb. Male foetuses synthesise certain compounds that female foetuses don't. These compounds are classed as antigens because they provoke an immune reaction from the mother, which gets stronger each time she harbours a male foetus. The reaction probably interferes with certain pathways in the developing brain, and this might account for a difference in sexual orientation.

In whatever way this effect is achieved, the statistics implies a biological component to homosexuality in men - though note that the biological component in this case is immunological rather than genetic (except in so far as male foetuses possess different genes on account of their having a Y chromosome which contains the genes that synthesise the antigens). The famous "gay gene" that was discovered in the early 1990s - Xq28, which is actually a region on the distal end of the X chromosome - has been called into question, since the results were not replicated in some subsequent studies (though homosexuality, which pertains to behaviour, could well be the result of a complex multi-locus interaction, making it difficult to pin down any genetic basis for it, and some other candidate regions have been identified, though we simply don't know enough to be able to say whether these are important. Note that none of this means that there can't be any regions of the genome where a change would - on average - predispose homosexuality. On the other hand, it doesn't mean that it has to be there, but to suppose that it can't be there is baseless).

The environment (like the mother's womb) will have an enormous influence on development. So even if we find that no proportion of the variance in sexual orientation is attributable to genetic differences, we would still be left with the task of figuring out what environmental factor played a role in this, and that could be hormonal, immunological, sociological, or an interaction of all three.

Lui,
Remember, your appeal environmental factors have nothing to do with a moral argument.
"No clear conclusions about the morality of a behavior can be made from the mere fact of biological causation, because all behavior is biologically caused" (Brian S. Mustanski and J. Michael Bailey, "A therapist's guide to the genetics of human sexual orientation," Sexual and Relationship Therapy 18:4 [2003]: 432).

Alas, you're right. But I wasn't making any claims as to whether homosexuality is "right" or "wrong". I was simply saying that there is evidence that it does have an environmental component, and possibly a genetic one. Its moral status is a different question altogether. I was really just responding to the implication that homosexuals can't be "born that way". It seems odd to me that anyone would choose to be homosexual given the stigma it arouses. Being in a relationship with someone of the same sex isn't something one does just to piss off God. It's a real commitment, involving real feelings.

Hey Mark:
Its been awhile since Ive been to your blog. Its good to see that your still fighting the good fight.
I want to comment on something Lui said.
My comment Lui is that homosexuality cant be discussed by leaving out moral or right and wrong even though the words arent spoken.
Gay People amaze me in the way you say you dont believe in God but yet you continue to visit Christian sites to argue your point and you say Its not to anger God.The fact is that everyone believes in God.You can deny it and argue it and rebel to justify your sin.
It doesnt matter what kind of information anyone puts out there or how factual it is,your going to find fault in it unless its in your favor.
Even if I wasnt a Christian,I would still agree with everything that Mark post on his blog that opposes you.Its not just Christians that are against you,its the whole world and most important,God,but he still loves you but its a mystery to me and question I ponder on from time to time by wondering if Gays with all the anger and hate and denial,if God has hardened your hearts because of your choice as he did Pharaoh. The mystery will never be found in a gene or through science but the truth is in Gods word.
He would be against himself to create gays and then call it a sin.
Its odd that you are so simular to Pharaoh. He saw Gods power to no end and he knew it was God, but like you he denied and rebelled.
Yes you know there is the one true God.
